12th of May – Around St. Petersburg and hockey night

0 km Peterhof - Pushkin

Today it was a much more relaxed day. Dima, my host, had the day off, so took me to different places around the city.

Our first stop was Peterhof. It has a palace with really beautiful gardens. The most impressive thing is the fountains. There are lots and some of them are huge. In the main one all the statues are covered in gold. In Russia many things are covered in gold, even buildings.

Here we walked around and we talked. Well, mainly I asked questions about Russian culture, history and customs.

In this village there is a really nice orthodox church, which we visited. As I could not visit Our Savior on the Blood in the city, I was really interested to see the inside. At least from the outside are quite similar. Unfortunately it was not allowed to take pictures, so I can´t show you, but I find this churches really unique and interesting.

Later we had lunch in the university, as Dima´s faculty is not far from there. It was really cheap, and it was big. It was only for students of that university, but we told the lady I was a guest, and she didn´t say anything else.

Afterwards we went to Pushkin and we saw the palace there. Inside it´s nice and it has the amber room. At the beginning I was afraid it was just going to be a tourist trap, but it´s really impressive, a whole room covered in amber. It´s not the original, as it was stolen by the Nazis and got lost somehow.

Later we went to see a wooden cathedral. Unfortunately it was too late and it was closed, but at least we could see the outside. It´s really a pity, because I was really interested. But I like the city so much I will return, for sure.

We went back to the city and we got ready to go to one of his friend’s house. Today the Russian Team was playing against Canada in the quarter finals of the ice hockey world cup, and they were meeting to see the match. It was quite exiting, as they started losing but they won at the end. With each goal, and some other times too, they had a shot of vodka. I also tried it. It´s curious how I almost forgot about trying vodka in the most famous country for it.

It was really nice that Dima had free time and could show me around. I learned many things that I would have never known. And later meeting other Russians it was great to see better how the society works. I found interesting that they don´t count Russia as Europe, and when the compare they say “In Europe…”

At night we saw how the bridges opened, something really typical of this city.

12 de Mayo – Alrededor de San Petersburgo y noche de Hockey

0 km Peterhof - Pushkin
