17th of May – Tartu, the eternal university city

0 km – Tartu

This is an amazing city. Tartu is so lively, with many students and places for them, that I´m having a great time. I know that before I was sad for leaving Saint Petersburg, but now I found the next great place to spend some time.

I woke up a bit early and I had a great breakfast. My friend Kertu likes cooking, and she is feeding me very good.

Later we walked around the city and we entered some museums. She is a really good guide. She hosts many people through couchsurfing, and she really knows how to show them the city.

We visited the national museum, which is really interesting, to see how the Estonians lived in the past. On the way to the old center we climbed to the top of two churches, both of them medieval, made of red bricks. As this country is so flat, you can see quite far from up there, even with the trees full of leaves.

The main building of the university is also interesting, it´s basically the center of life. It has been a university city for many centuries, so the students are very important and have lots of traditions. Even in front of the town hall, there is a statue of “the kissing students”.

There are lots of pubs, bars, and cafés full of students, professors and artist looking people. It´s a really special place, where culture and knowledge just seem to float in the air. Many places have discounts for students, like the bookshops, where I didn´t have any problems finding the “Little Prince”. I was counting and I think I have it in 18 languages now.

In the evening I met another friend of mine, Hanna, and her boyfriend. It´s been almost 4 years that I haven´t seen her, so it was nice to be able to spend some time with her. We went to a pub, one of many in the city, but it’s the first one I go to in this trip.

After this friend left, Kertu came so we continued the evening in Zavood. It used to be a bohemian place, with lots of artists. But now it’s the most known student pub, which is the last one to close.

The city is great! It´s small, you can walk everywhere but still there are many things to see and visit. I decided to stay another day, I stayed till too long in the pubs, and I still haven´t seen another friend who lives here.

Below you can see one the medieval brick churches, the statue of the kissing students, and a dragon, that you can see in many buildings, and it goes back to the Hanseatic League period.

17 de Mayo – Tartu, la eterna ciudad universitaria.

0 km – Tartu

Me he levantado un poco temprano y he tomado un gran desayuno.
