1st of June – First mountainous road

136,40 km Czestochowa – Krakow

Lots of people had warned me that the way to Krakow was going to be much more hilly, but I never really paid attention. Mainly because before, especially in the Baltic Countries, when they told me that I was going to find hills, they were really small. I should have listened, but still it was not that hard.

I didn´t leave the city till past noon. We were partying till late yesterday and I still wanted to see a bit of the city. Paulina, my host, took me for a short walk, and showed me a couple things. But I really wanted to get going, to arrive to Krakow before it got dark.

The weather till I started going was good, but on the moment I took the bike out, I heard a thunder. For a while I could hear many thunders and lots of dark looking clouds, but it was not raining. Anyway, I put the plastic covers on the panniers, and got the raincoat ready.

It was not till I left the city limits when it decided to rain. Luckily it was just a summer storm. It´s true that it was really hard rain, but it only lasted 15 minutes, and afterwards the sun came again. And on the bike I dry pretty fast, so in a couple hours everything was dry, and it was really warm anyway.

I was planning on taking secondary roads almost all the way, but it turned out that some of them were closed, under constructions, how not. So looking at the map I saw some country roads, which actually were straighter. I took them and they were good, the only problem was that they went uphill and downhill all the time. It was not that hard, it was not that much fun to go up at 14 km/h, but it was great come down around 50km/h.

The rest of the day went without any adventures. Surprisingly everything was very well signed, so I didn´t have to ask for directions. I also didn´t stop much, as I wanted to get to my next destination.

When I was getting closer I heard thunders again, another storm was coming. Luckily the last kilometers were downhill, so I was hurrying into the center of Krakow. Sometimes I was even speeding with the bike, going over 60 km/h. It was fun.

Once in the center, I had a map and directions to my friend’s house, so it was really easy to get there. But before I arrived, my front wheel got stock in the tram rails. To get out I had to pull it up, and I lost control, but I didn´t fall down thanks to a traffic sign that I could hug.

When I was 2 minutes away it started raining, so I took cover in a nearby house. There a woman let me in her building, where I waited for almost half an hour. As it didn´t look like stopping I kept going, and I arrived to my friend´s house. There I had dinner with her and her boyfriend and chat for a while. After we went to bed, as I´m planning on leaving the city early tomorrow, providing it´s not raining.

So finally I encountered some little mountains. It was ok to have a little change, and anyway it was good practice for tomorrow, because I will start crossing the Tatra towards Hungary. I know it´s not going to be easy, but I really want to test myself in the mountains.

1 de Junio – Primeras carreteras montañosas.

136,40 km Czestochowa – Krakow
