26th of June – Reaching the Atlantic

171,63 km Pau – San Sebastian

Finally I reached the Atlantic Ocean, well the Cantabric sea, but this is a coast that I know better.  It´s the middle of a heat wave so it was a tough day.

As always, I left later than planned but it was lots of fun to enjoy breakfast with the family. I met the mother of the kids, who was not here yesterday for dinner. I love French breakfast, with chocolate croissants and fresh bread with homemade jam. I could get used to this every morning. It was very relaxed, so I didn’t hurry to leave, but I had to get going.

It was going to be a very hot day, so I wanted to do many kilometers before midday, and It was not hard, because it was downhill most of the first 100 km. but I had to stop around 1,5 hours, because it was very hard to cycle in this heat wave.

Part of the way was next to the Gave river, so it was not difficult to find a nice place by the water in the shadow, the problem was to find an empty place. There were lots of families doing picnics. Also I saw one man walking with a backpack and 2 cycloturists. And in this road there were almost no cars, so it was fun.

As I was getting close to Bayonne there was a cooler wind coming, still hot, but much better than before. At this point I was running out of water, and there were no bars or fountains. I still had the emergency water, but I prefer not to use it. When I decided to wait a few more kilometers before using the water in my bags, but I found a small café. They gave me water, and I wanted to get a cold fanta, but it was 3 euros, so I decided not to get one.

At the beginning I could still see the Pyrenees, but later there were much smaller mountains. And I got to the French Basque country. There was no sign but I could see that the villages had more Basque names, and they had “frontones” (place to play a Basque game), but the French ones, which are different from the ones where I live.

From Bayonne I got to St. Jean de Luz through the main road, but it was good as there were many bike roads. From this other village to the border I went next to the coast and the beaches. There were lots of people in the sea, but no cars, so for me it was good.

From Hendaye I had less than 20 km to the place where my friend’s uncle was waiting for me. It was through the national 1, but the side of the road is very wide, so there was no problem. I got a bit lost, because there was a part where bikes were not allowed, but soon I called my host and I found his place.

For dinner he treated me out, a mixed plate, so typical in Spain. Sometimes I missed this fatty food, so I enjoyed a lot. It was still very warm so we were sitting in a terrace, where it was much nicer. From there we went home and I went to sleep not much later.

Tomorrow I will get home. Hopefully I will get for a late lunch, but it also depends on the warmth, as we are in the worst heat wave of the decade, so if it gets too hot I will stop in the shadow.

Y he cruzado al País Vasco francés.
